job-title

How important is the job title in your job postings and job ads?  Will it influence how many job candidates apply for your open position?  The short answer is yes, it is extremely important in finding top talent in the construction industry.

The title of your open position, is the one chance you have, to convince people to read on or even open your job description.  Hiring managers and recruiters often struggle with creating job titles that are catchy, but also convey what the job duties include.  Keep these considerations in mind when creating your next job title:

  • Keep in mind that your job title will be the keywords that are looked for in a job search by a candidate. It will have an influence on how it is indexed and found on Google, as well has as how it will show up in searches on job boards.
  • Do not try to oversell your open position in the title. Too many keywords in your title could hinder or have the reverse effect in finding qualified candidates.  When you try to oversell the job by giving it an elaborate title, you will end up with the limited candidates.
  • Similar to a job title that oversells, if you undersell, you will have too many candidates that are simply not a good fit for the open position. You will spend your time weeding through in appropriate candidates.
  • Depending on the culture of your company, using a cute or quirky job title can have various effects on the job candidates you will get from your ad. It is best to stay clear of these “novelty” titles, however, you know your company best, if you believe it will provide you with a specific job candidate type – then have fun with it.

As you create your job postings, job titles, and job descriptions, keep in mind the type of candidate you wish to attract.  The job title tells a job candidate a lot about the company and the position they are applying for, therefore, it is important you get it right.
