While many hiring managers have used personality assessments for years, many in the construction industry have stayed away from these tests.  However, recently, many in the construction industry have learned that this test is probably the most important test to give candidates.

Many hiring managers and recruiters in the construction industry have discovered that certain personality traits make excellent workers.  This has sparked many to begin administering personality assessments to all job candidates.  Here is an overview of the traits most are searching for:

  • Dominance – while most businesses will stay clear of a candidate that tests with high dominance, in the construction industry, hiring managers are finding that those testing high with this trait are very resourceful and are a great advantage on the job site. They typically have lots of ideas and are not afraid to share them, as well as, higher passion for the work they do.
  • Extraversion – while most businesses are looking for this trait to be somewhere in the middle of the scale, again in the construction industry, they want someone on the high end of the scale. Those on the high side are typically empathetic with others and make excellent teammates.  They usually excel at building teams, something you need on the job site.
  • Patience – contrary to the above two traits, patience is something you will want on the lower end. Typically, those that test lower in patience are more adaptable and have less problems with change.  Since the daily work schedule can change in construction, it is best to have someone that is lower on patience.
  • Formality – most businesses tend to stay away from the formality score for many reasons. However, it is best if you can find someone that test in middle.  Those that score high typically are perfectionist and do impeccable work, while those that score low are typically more flexible and are willing to take a few more risks.  You will want someone in the middle (the best of both worlds).

As you can see, personality assessments can be a very valuable tool in finding the right candidates for your next construction job.  Consider adding them to your process today.
