Today’s job market is very different than in years past, which is why it is so important that even those in the construction industry build a network that will help them find the best job.  But, how do you find the best connection that will optimize your network and help you land the perfect job?

Here are the best types of people to network with and why they can help you in your job search:

  • Your first level of people that should be in your network are coworkers and others that you have worked with in the past. They know you, know your work ethic and style, and are great to use as references.  Do not underestimate their connections to others, you never know when they will connect you with someone that will make a difference in your career.
  • Next you will want to network with people that are in the same occupation and same industry as you. These people understand and know the skills needed and can introduce you to others.  They are usually like-minded and have similar goals to you, so they should be easy to connect with.
  • You will also want to connect with people that are in the same industry but have a different occupation. For example, the are in the construction industry, but their expertise is in excavation and not roofing.  The information you can glean from these contacts is useful if you are looking to expand your skill set.
  • Do not forget to network with your target companies. Make a list of those companies you want to work with and find ways to network with them.  This will give you inside information, and many times companies will hire based on current employee recommendations.

It is important that you connect with the right people to optimize your network and allow it to work to your benefit.  Consider these suggestions above.
