It is no secret the construction industry is struggling to fill positions.  In fact, recent information just released, indicates that there was a 17% decline in construction workers recently.  This is causing havoc with projects and many companies are starting to lose jobs because they do not have the required numbers of staff – a worker shortage!

The growing gap in available construction workers, is leaving many companies and hiring managers to think outside the box and find ways to combat the worker shortage.  Several construction companies have recently released several ideas they have used to find workers – could any of these be for you?

  • Gaining incredible popularity is the virtual career fair. Many bigger construction companies have gotten together to develop and host a virtual fair to attract and find workers.  Many of these companies were struggling to find qualified workers, in which, the virtual fair helped bring talented candidates to them.
  • The new construction workforce will be comprised of younger workers, therefore, to attract these workers, you must use social media. Several hiring managers have started using social media to attract this younger crowd, showing the benefits of working in construction, and playing to the wants of this generation.
  • Several companies have started offering paid intern-projects. For example, if they are in need of 10 workers for an upcoming job, they will post an internship (instead of the typical hire).  They will offer to pay these interns for their service and allow them to learn on the job.  This gives them the opportunity to learn, get paid, and determine if this is something they want to do.

Yes, it is a struggle to find enough construction workers today, however, if you learn to think outside the box, you can combat the worker shortage.  Consider some of these methods listed and see if they will work for you!
