More and more job candidates are looking to review the job description before even agreeing to an interview.  This has caused some problems in the construction industry, because typically, the job description is not reviewed until the interview or after hire.  To attract top talent, you need to make it available to job candidates during the job search.  Here are a few tips on how to write the best job descriptions:

  • The job title is the most important piece of information on the job description. Most candidates will not go past the title if not clear, concise, and exactly what they are looking for.  You must keep your title between 50-60 characters, and make sure that it is specific not only to construction, but to the job itself.  General laborer will not get the attention it deserves, versus using a title such as concrete laborer.
  • The overall purpose of the job description is to give the candidate a quick look at what the job will entail. Try and keep the description to about 4,000 characters, and make sure that you use specific, industry keywords that will help boost the views of it.  Give the candidate a look at the required duties, and any specific skill requirements.
  • Make sure that you construct the job description so it is easy to read, but more importantly, include the most important information at the top.
  • Many hiring managers forget to include company information in their job descriptions. You should include the company’s description, including culture, brand, and any other information you feel is important to the candidate.
  • The number one piece of information often not included on the job description is salary, however, this is one of the most important pieces of information candidates are looking for. Do not shy away from this information.  Instead, include the salary information, where it is easy to see and understand.

Job candidates today are looking for detailed information before they apply for construction jobs.  It is important that you give them the information they seek.  Have you written the best job descriptions to attract candidates?
