The majority of people that go to an interview get nervous, even those in the construction industry.  Whether you want to admit it to yourself or not, the interview is one area where you often feel vulnerable, however, you should know that most hiring managers understand job candidates will be nervous.  Even though the hiring manager will understand some nervousness, it is important that you find ways to keep calm at your interview.

Here are just a few suggestions or tips to help you keep your calm when you interview for your next construction job:

  • Being prepared is the best way to cure some nerves during your interview. Make sure that you practice interviewing and plan ahead.  Choose your clothes the night before and lay them out, know exactly what time you will leave and how you will get to your interview, and always have extra resumes printed to handout if needed.
  • On the day of your interview, it is best to keep your morning light and stress free. Exercising or meditating in the morning can help calm you, as well as eating a healthy breakfast.
  • As you travel to your interview, a great way to keep your nerves in check is to visualize your success. Visualize yourself getting the construction job offer and accepting it.  Another great way to calm your nerves is to listen to music on your way to the interview.
  • As you sit and wait to meet the hiring manager, take some time to breathe and calm yourself. Taking a deep breathe before the interview will help calm your nerves and allow you to focus.

It is important to remember that you were chosen for this construction interview, therefore the hiring manager saw something in your resume that said you were right for the job.  Now is the time for you to keep calm, remember what you practiced, and have a great interview!
