Unemployment is not something that most construction workers want to talk about, yet it is a very real problem for many.  Being unemployed is very costly and can take a toll on not only your finances, but your mental health as well.  The true costs of unemployment involve many aspects, which you should be aware.

Even when you are aware, many will tell you to hold out for the best job.  While you may agree in theory, as the days go by, it can become more difficult to hold out for that perfect fit.  Here are a few things to keep in mind while you go through unemployment:

  • It is easy to get discouraged when the job offers are not pouring in during your search. It is important that you try and keep your self-esteem high.  One of the costliest mistakes during unemployment is becoming discouraged.  This can lead to you stopping your job search and find that you settle for the next job that comes along.
  • Some construction workers become bored during their job searches. Again, this can contribute to discouragement and taking the first job that comes along.  Try volunteering, teaching, or taking a class during your unemployment.  You might even want to take some smaller jobs to hold you over until you find the right one.  The important thing is to stay busy!
  • Stressing over money and expenses can take a toll on anyone, but even more so when you are unemployed. It is important to try and plan your expenses and try not to use up all of your savings during this time.  Explore all your options to find what will work best for you during this time.

The true costs of unemployment are different for everyone, depending on your situation, however, when you know the signs to look for, you can try and account for those issues ahead of time.
