Looking for a job in the construction industry, but not sure if social media is relevant?  Many job candidates in this industry look the other way when it comes to their job search and social media.  Most feel that posting or viewing social media will have no impact on them finding the job they want.

The opposite is true!  Social media has become the hub for job candidates looking for the job of their dreams, and yes, even for those in the construction industry.  In fact, many employers today are only listing their open positions on social media outlets, such as Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn, just to name a few.

Here are just a few things you should keep in mind when you use social media for your next construction job search:

  • When you begin your job search, you will want to jot down a few keywords about the position you are trying to find. You will use these keywords to locate positions that fall in line with what you are looking for.  For example, if you only do roofing, you would use keywords associated with that job.  Before you begin your search, make a list of the keywords you will search with.
  • Part of your job search is being active in discussion groups. Find several groups that relate to your industry and participate.  It is your participation in these groups that will often raise awareness to those seeking employees in your field.
  • Remember to remain professional while posting online. A potential employer can and will see everything you post, so make sure it is something that you want them to see.

As the process continues to change in job searching, it is important that you keep current with the latest trends.  Using social media in your job search is one of those trends that is not going away, therefore, you must embrace it and learn to use it to your advantage.
