construction-manager-qualities

Construction managers have a unique set of skills that are necessary to keep chaos from breaking free on a construction site.  They are often required to call upon those skills all at once.  Whether you are a seasoned manager or working towards becoming a manager, you must provide leadership, coordinate tasks, and oversee the completion of the project successfully.  Here are qualities every construction manager needs to make this happen:

  • Communication is key for construction managers. Not only will you be communicating with workers on the project, but you will need to communicate effectively with the customer of the project, government officials, office staff, suppliers, and other team members.  Make sure that you have excellent communication skills.
  • Delegation is hard for many people; however, an efficient construction manager will be able to delegate tasks appropriately. Because you will be pulled in many different directions, overseeing the project, it is impossible for you to be everywhere at once.  Successful managers are aware of their staff and can delegate appropriately.
  • Construction projects are complex and have many moving parts. All managers must be able to prioritize activities for the entire project.  This quality is essential in making sure the project stays on track and on budget.  You should be able to adjust to any circumstance thrown your way to keep the project moving forward.
  • Every good construction manager understands the importance of teamwork. In addition, you know how to motivate the team and keep productivity moving forward.  Good teamwork values are important in showing your leadership.
  • As with any job, problems will arise. As a construction manager, you must possess problem solving skills and be able to utilize those skills quickly.  You may be faced with a wide range of issues to contend with, such as weather delays, supply issues, or even staff problems.

You already understand that the work of a manager is complex and multi-dimensional, however, it is important that you understand how the qualities above can help you achieve success in your role as construction manager.  These qualities will provide you with great work experience and a positive work environment.
