The construction industry has seen better days when it comes to hiring and recruiting talent.  In fact, many companies have recently said it is the worst they have seen in finding good quality candidates.  As many of the older construction workers retire, the new, younger workforce is simply not interested in the construction industry – or so it seems.  If this is true, then how can you improve your recruiting strategy to compensate for this change?

In order to improve your recruiting strategy, you must first take a step back and look at your business as a whole.  Here are a few tips on how you can tackle the construction worker shortage in your company:

  • The shortage of qualified workers has caused many company owners to work in their business, not on their business. It is easy to get caught in that trap, however, when you do not have the time to work on a recruiting strategy, suddenly things become bad very quickly.  It is important that you take the time necessary to understand the value of your business.  This will help drive decisions regarding the investment of people in your company.
  • Until you are able to address the value of your business, stick with the core processes. This simply means, do not try to be all things to all people.  If you need to outsource work until you can get a clear picture of what your staff should look like, then do so.  Identify your strengths and core processes, fill those positions first, then work on adding the others.
  • In-house training programs have become one of the staples in the construction industry. What better way to make sure you cover all of your core processes and then some.  Offer training programs that allow new candidates to work with those that are set to retire.  Pass on the wisdom, so to speak!

There are a number of ways you can improve your recruiting strategy, including work-based incentives, evaluating the core processes of your work, and valuing your company.  Take the time to understand your company and improve your recruiting.
