While the construction industry continues to grow and hiring managers and construction employers continue to advance in normal business activities, there is still one area that needs a lot of work – employer feedback.  Employer feedback in the construction industry is still lacking according to a recent survey.

Construction workers are looking to work for companies that are willing to allow them to grow and excel, however, that is hard to do with no feedback.  Employer feedback is not something that has been done regularly in the construction industry, however, now is the time if you want to keep your great candidates!  Here are a few tips:

  • It is important that you understand who should give the feedback to the employee. Most often it is best received by an employee when the feedback is given by an immediate supervisor.  This allows them to discuss details on the situation.  If another management member gave the feedback, imagine how difficult it would be to discuss the situation in detail.  Make sure you choose the appropriate person to provide the feedback.
  • Remember that the purpose of providing feedback is so the employee and employer can get on the same page. Giving feedback allows the employee to learn, grow, and excel in their job.  Make sure that you keep their interests in mind and providing suggested solutions is always a great way to make sure everyone understands clearly.
  • The best thing you can do when giving feedback to an employee is prepare. Make sure you take the time to prepare what you will say, examples you can give, and solutions to help guide the employee to the desired goal.
  • The most important part of this whole process is to make sure that you are clear and descriptive in your conversation. When finished both parties should have a clear understanding of the discussion.

Workers today want feedback, especially in the construction industry where there has been a lack of it.  When was the last time you provided some great feedback to your construction employees?
