Unlike many other industries, the construction industry can present some unique challenges to hiring managers.  Not only do you have to find top talent, but you have to juggle projects that require specific skill sets, tight deadlines that require immediate hires, and find teams of people to work together.

While this may seem insurmountable to many hiring managers, you continue on day in and day out, looking for that great candidate.  One of the best ways to keep up with the everyday changes, is to review your hiring process periodically.  Here are a few things you should do when reviewing your hiring process:

  • Your job postings are critical to your success in finding talent. It is important that you review and create detailed job postings for the specific jobs you have available.  The more detail you provide in your posting, the better.  This will grab the attention of those that are right for the job.  Make sure your postings are clear, concise, and include all the necessary information.
  • Learn to use your current employees to your advantage. Put in place programs or incentives for your existing employees.  They are the best referrals!
  • Even when you do not have an open position, never stop looking for the next hire. It is rare that a construction hiring manager does not have an open position, but if the occasion should arise, keep looking.  It is best to keep looking for great talent that you can add when the time is right.  Many companies have found top talent this way.
  • Make sure that your assessment tests are reviewed regularly. It is best to have these tests updated, so you are getting true results.

Reviewing your hiring process is critical to keeping everything running smoothly.  When your hiring process is like a well-oiled machine, it will make your job much easier.
