A construction superintendent’s responsibilities will vary depending on the type of project or company working with.  If you have considered becoming a “super,” it is important that you understand all the roles and responsibilities involved with this position.  Before you apply for the next superintendent position, here are the types of tasks you may be asked to handle:

  • Human Resources – you will either work directly with the hiring manager of the company, or may even be the hiring manager. You will be involved in selecting, interviewing, and hiring all workers, but your responsibility does not stop there.  You will also be involved in their training, discipline, and evaluation.  Your workers will look to you for answers, advice, and more.
  • Supervision – one of the main tasks of a construction superintendent is supervising all projects. This may include visiting sites, meeting with customers, and coordinating with vendors and subcontractors.  It is your job to make sure that all aspects of the project are running smoothly.
  • Accounting – while most companies will have an office employee that will handle the majority of all financial functions, there may be times when the super is asked to be involved. Often, you will be asked to assist in determining a budget for a project or creating an estimate for a customer.  It will be your responsibility to make sure the project stays on budget throughout, and upon completion, review inventory and more.

As you can see, it is the construction superintendent’s job to make sure the entire project stays on track, coordinate all activities associated with the project, and communicate with a variety of people throughout the entire process.

Many super’s have evolved into their position, starting at entry level and moving up the ranks.  While there may be no request for additional education, experience is usually a requirement.  If you are interested in becoming a construction superintendent, make that clear on your resume – or discuss it with your current employer!
