While there seems to be plenty of opportunity in the construction industry, many workers still wonder if they should accept or even consider taking a short-term job.  There are many opinions on the matter, but what matters in the end, are your goals.  Below are a few things to consider before accepting a short-term construction job:

  • Positive – taking on a short-term project can help you financially, especially if you have had trouble finding work. While taking the job will help ease some of the financial burden, remember that it is a temporary fix and you will need to continue looking for the right position.
  • Positive – are you unsure which area of construction you “really” want to work? Taking on temporary or short-term projects is a great way to “test the waters.”  It will give you the opportunity to try several areas you are interested in, so you can narrow it down to your favorite.
  • Positive – many will tell you that taking on short-term jobs is better than settling for the wrong job. You can take on temp projects, while you find the exact job you are looking for.
  • Negative – be careful which short-term projects you choose. Not all companies are worth working for and use these types of jobs as a way to turn over their staff for a variety of reasons.  Do you research before accepting any of these projects to make sure you will be working for a reputable company.
  • Positive – when you take smaller jobs, you often can grow your network. Each project will give you a new set of people to meet, possibly providing you with a relationship that will lead to your perfect job.
  • Positive – advancing or increasing your skill set is a great way to increase your chances of finding the perfect job that will fit in with your long-term goals. Taking on smaller, short-term jobs can help you build your skill set and perfect new skills.

Taking on a short-term project may not be right for you and your overall goals, but if you are undecided, consider these statements before making your decision.
